Concept illustration · Order flow and market structure

Market structure describes the sequence of price swings. Order flow describes trading activity and orders in a particular market or feed. They can add context, but neither makes the next price movement certain.

Map the structure

An uptrend is commonly described by higher highs and higher lows; a downtrend by lower highs and lower lows. A range moves between areas without a consistent directional sequence. Define how you identify a swing before drawing conclusions, and use the same rule across your examples.

Breaks are observations, not promises

A move below a prior swing low may weaken an uptrend hypothesis. It can also be a temporary move. Decide what would count as a break—an intrabar touch, a close, or another rule—and test that definition. Changing the definition after every trade makes results hard to evaluate.

Understand the flow data

Executed trades and displayed orders provide different information. An aggressive buy executes against an available sell offer; every completed trade has both a buyer and seller. Price changes depend on how orders interact with available liquidity. A candle wick alone does not identify institutional buying or selling.

Liquidity and stop orders

Stops may be concentrated around popular levels, but their exact distribution is usually not visible to a retail trader. A quick reversal is not proof that a named institution targeted your stop. Choose invalidation levels based on your tested method and adjust position size to the distance.

Profiles and volume nodes

A volume profile groups traded volume by price; a time-based market profile groups activity differently. A value area often uses a configurable share of the selected distribution. Check the tool’s settings and feed. A high-volume area is historical information, not a guaranteed future floor or ceiling.

Your next steps

Mark swings on a chart before revealing the next period. Record the structure, a possible invalidation point and the limits of your data. Review how often your interpretation changed and why.
