Concept illustration · Institutional vs retail trading

Institutional and retail traders share markets, but they do not share the same objectives or resources. Understanding the difference helps you avoid treating every large price move as a secret message.

Different reasons to trade

Banks may provide liquidity or manage client orders. Companies may hedge future foreign-currency payments. Asset managers may adjust portfolio exposure. Some funds speculate. A large transaction may be driven by a business obligation rather than a prediction about tomorrow’s exchange rate.

Capital, access and execution

Large firms can have specialist research, execution systems and access to multiple liquidity providers. Size also creates constraints: executing a large order without moving the price can be difficult. Retail traders have smaller positions but still face spreads, financing costs, execution risk and limited information.

What a chart cannot reveal

A long wick, breakout or price gap does not prove which institution traded or why. Stop orders may cluster near familiar levels, but a move through those levels is not proof of deliberate manipulation. Distinguish an observable price pattern from a story about the trader behind it.

Borrow the process, not the mythology

Written limits, records, scenario analysis and review are useful habits. Institutions can also make mistakes and lose money. A professional label does not make a strategy safe or suitable for a smaller account.

Your next steps

Observe a sharp move and write two separate notes: what the price actually did, and possible explanations. Mark the explanations as hypotheses. Then record what evidence would support or contradict each one.
